Update on Sinkhole at Montebello I Water Treatment Plant

On Wednesday afternoon, Department of Public Works (DPW) personnel discovered a sinkhole at the Montebello 1 Water Treatment Plant, likely caused by erosion to a stormwater main installed in the 1880s. To ensure the safe mitigation of the sinkhole, DPW has determined that the best course of action is to stop the flow through the exposed 84-inch water main that is currently partially suspended above the sinkhole. This action is out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of those working at the location.

Statement on Sinkhole at Montebello I Water Treatment Plant

Yesterday, DPW crews discovered a sinkhole on the Montebello I Water Treatment Plant property. The sinkhole resulted from a compromised 108” stormwater main installed in the 1880s, which exposed an 84” water main. DPW is coordinating with our state and local partners to stabilize the site swiftly so that the pipes can be secured, the sinkhole backfilled, and water service maintained for our valued customers.”
