May 23, 2013 (Baltimore, MD) — The Baltimore City Department of Public Works selected its second “Employee of the Year” today at a ceremony held at the War Memorial Building at 101 N. Gay St. Alice Wilhoit was selected from among six finalists. A 30-year employee, Ms. Wilhoit works in the Environmental Services Division, Water Treatment Section at the Montebello facility, which is responsible for converting raw water into drinking water and maintaining water quality standards throughout the entire Baltimore Metropolitan distribution system.

Ms. Wilhoit was recognized as an exceptional employee who has provided a high quality level of office support to her section for more than 30 years. She is the lead for her office team and often completes additional tasks to meet requirements at the facility. Ms. Wilhoit, referred to as the “Den Mother,” keeps the section’s morale at a high level by being supportive of her coworkers. In her free time, she DJs at a variety of senior citizen homes, sings with the DPW/DOT band and singers and spends time with her grandchildren.

DPW established the Employee of the Month program in May 2011 to recognize and encourage high quality work and service to Baltimore city residents by Public Works employees. Every month, an employee is honored from the Bureaus of Solid Waste, Water and Wastewater, and DPW Administration. From those 36 employees, six finalists were nominated by Bureau Heads and the DPW Chief of Staff. An employee committee reviewed the nominations, interviewed the candidates and ranked them. The criteria includes customer service, relationship with co-workers, contribution to the community, etc.

Ms. Wilhoit received three days permission leave, a one night stay at the Hotel Monaco, a gift certificate for two at Fogo De Chao and a gift of two tickets to a sporting event. Gifts were donated and/or paid for by members of DPW’s executive staff.

Other nominees included Paula Bond, a secretary; Crystal Goodson, an operations technician; Michelle Jernigan, a Bobcat operator; Tameka Holness, a word processing operator; and Ray Perales, a systems analyst.
