Mayor Scott, DPW Announce Immediate Lifting of the Voluntary Water Restriction for Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard Counties
Wednesday Aug 9th, 2023
Mayor Brandon M. Scott is pleased to announce that the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) is lifting the ‘Voluntary Water Restriction’ notice for Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties, effective immediately. The City’s water distribution system has stabilized and resumed normal operations following the July 13 fire at the Cromwell Pumping Station located in Baltimore County.
“I’m grateful for residents and community members from Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties who voluntary participated in conserving water during this period,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “It’s because of everyone’s unwavering commitment to protect the region’s water system we were able to alleviate the strain on our water resources.”
Immediately after the Cromwell Pumping Station fire, residents, and businesses in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties were asked to reduce excessive water use to lessen any additional strain on the system as DPW worked to restore operations at the Cromwell Pumping Station.
To date, pumping capacity and electricity have been restored at the facility and repairs have been made to the valving system, control system, and two of the four pump motors. These repairs have allowed DPW to stabilize operations at the pump station while the facility undergoes a more thorough rehabilitation in the coming months.
Although the Voluntary Water Restriction Notice has been lifted, residents and businesses are reminded to continue practicing water-efficient habits. This is an important aspect of maintaining the sustainability and resilience of our local water supply.
“Our water system delivers high-quality water and is one of the Baltimore region’s greatest assets. When it comes to water use, we should always keep in mind that every drop counts,” said Interim DPW Director Richard J. Luna.
