City Reports Sewer Overflow

Overflow stopped but pumping continues.

The Department of Public Works today announced that a sanitary sewer overflow has occurred in the vicinity of Wilkens Avenue and S. Dukeland St. The overflow entered the Gwynns Falls at this location. Overflow spillage is estimated at approximately 446,000 gallons.

The cause is a suspected blockage in the sewer line. Crews are on the scene with temporary pumps to move the flow around the blockage. This stops the overflow and allows for the examination of the inside of the 27 inch sewer main. The overflow was reported to DPW yesterday at 3:00 p.m. and was diverted via pumping at 11:15 p.m.

Due to the on-going pumping operations, Hurley Ave. remains closed at Wilkens Ave.

The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department have been notified and the stream has been posted. For more information about health concerns as a result of the overflows, contact the Health Department at 410-396-4422.
