Hundreds of Smart Cans Helping to Fight Business District Litter

In less than four months, 280 Smart Cans have been placed in business districts, gateways, and neighborhoods around the City.

New Year's Day Holiday: DPW Offices, Yards Closed on Jan. 1

New Year's Day is a City holiday; the Baltimore City Department of Public Works’ (DPW) offices and yards will be closed on Tuesday, January 1. DPW offices and facilities are open New Year's Eve, and trash and recycling collections will occur as scheduled on December 31. Saturday, January 5, 2019, will be the makeup collection day for trash and recycling in those areas that are regularly scheduled for collection on Tuesday.

DPW Holiday Recycling Services: Christmas Tree Mulching, Curbside Pickup and More

Now that the Christmas holiday is over, Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Rudolph S. Chow, P.E., today offered important reminders to residents on curbside collection and mulching of Christmas trees - mulching starts Jan. 5 and curbside tree collection begins Jan. 2, 2019.

Second Set of Sewer Overflows Last Week Reported

About 9.6 million gallons of stormwater mixed with sewer water overflowed into Baltimore streams last Friday, Dec. 21, as a result of infiltration from heavy overnight rains. A total of about 7.5 million gallons flowed into the Jones Falls from locations on Preston Street and on Falls Road; and about 2.1 million gallons flowed into the Herring Run from a stream bank manhole near Belair Road.

Christmas Day and New Year's Day Holidays

DPW offices and facilities are open on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and trash and recycling collections will occur as scheduled on those days.

Rain Causes Weekend Sewer Overflows

Rains in the Baltimore area on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16, contributed to sanitary sewer overflows of about 20 million gallons of stormwater mixed with sewer water.

DPW’s Back in the Community: Tuesday, Dec. 18

Director Chow invites City residents to attend one of the three remaining “DPW in the Community” Meetings. The next community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the Public Safety & Training Facility, 3500 W. Northern Parkway, Baltimore, Md. 21215. The meeting starts promptly at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m.

Comment Period Extended for Watershed Assessments

The 30-day public comment period for Baltimore City’s watershed assessments of the North Lower Branch Patapsco and Baltimore Harbor watersheds is being extended by four weeks, to 5 p.m. on Jan. 16, 2019.
