Fleet & Fuel
We're on the road every day. The City's fleet provides essential services - putting out fires, maintaining public safety, and keeping the streets clean.
Vehicle fuel accounted for 23 percent of the City's energy costs in 2014.The biggest users of fuel are police cruisers and trash trucks.
The DGS Fleet Management division is responsible for the purchase, maintenance and operations of the fleet of vehicles used by City agencies.
The Office of Sustainable Energy works with Fleet Management and City agencies to identify opportunities to reduce fuel use and get the best fuel prices.
Electric vehicle infrastructure
The Office supports the use of electric vehicles for City agencies as well as the public. With the Parking Authority, we installed thirteen electric vehicle chargers in city garages and two street-side locations near City Hall. This project was made possible by grants from the Maryland Energy Administration, Maryland Department of the Environment and the US Department of Energy ChargePoint America Block Grant. We are actively seeking new opportunities to expand electric vehicle charging.
Exploring alternative fuel for City vehicles
The Office organizes and finds funding opportunities for pilots of different types of alternative fuel. Two active studies are for compressed natural gas trucks and electric vehicles.
