DPW HOLIDAY REMINDER: NO SWIMMING AT CITY-OWNED RESERVOIRS

With a long holiday weekend ahead, Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Acting Director Matthew W. Garbark, has issued a reminder to the public that swimming is not allowed in City reservoirs. 

A tragic drowning occurred this week at the City-owned Liberty Reservoir. Already this year, several drownings and emergency rescues have been reported in other parts of the State. DPW asks that everyone obey our reservoirs' “No Swimming” warnings. 

Baltimore City has three raw-water reservoirs located in Baltimore and Carroll Counties: Prettyboy, Loch Raven and Liberty. These areas are open to visitors and offer beautiful scenery with recreational opportunities. Walking, biking, hiking, fishing, boating and other activities are available to the public; swimming is NOT allowed.

Temperatures in these deep waters drop quickly, and diving into them may lead to hypothermia. In addition, there are very rapid drop-offs, currents, hidden rocks and branches. “No Swimming” warning signs are posted at each of the City’s three reservoirs. Those caught swimming can be charged with trespassing. 

All visitors are encouraged to call  911 in the event of an emergency.  DPW’s Environmental Police are onsite and available to assist.  Have a safe holiday and summer.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott has announced his intent to nominate Khalil Zaied as the new Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW). Zaied, who most recently led the Department of Public Works in Champaign, Illinois, will join DPW on March 18, 2024. Previously, he was a nearly 20 year veteran of Baltimore City Government, serving as Deputy Mayor of Operations and Director of Transportation, among other roles.

Mayor Scott, City Agencies Highlight the Return of Weekly Recycling

On Monday, March 4, Mayor Brandon M. Scott, Department of Public Works Interim Director Richard J. Luna, Department of General Services Director Berke Attila, and Baltimore City Chief Administrative Officer Faith Leach joined city staff and community members to highlight the return of weekly, curbside recycling collections for Baltimore City residents, starting Tuesday, March 5.
