City Kicks Off 42nd Annual Mitten Tree Campaign

BALTIMORE, MD — The Baltimore City Department of Public Works today launched the 42nd annual Mitten Tree Campaign, inviting area citizens and City workers to donate mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves to help make this winter warmer for Baltimore City children in need.

To mark the start of the 2015 Mitten Tree Campaign, leaders from DPW and the departments of Transportation and General Services joined with area school children to decorate the towering Christmas tree in the lobby of the Abel Wolman Municipal Building with hats, gloves, and mittens. All the warm clothing will be distributed to a Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. 

“I am asking area citizens and all City workers to join in this year’s Mitten Tree Campaign by donating to this year’s collection of mittens, scarves, hats, and gloves. These items will help to keep Baltimore children warm this winter,” said DPW Director Rudy Chow, P.E. 

The Mitten Tree Ceremony featured music by the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Jazz Band, and continued with the Abbottston Elementary School choir and a special appearance by Santa Claus! The Franklin Square Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club also performed. The Mitten Tree Toss and the visit from Santa closed out the Mitten Tree Ceremony.

Citizens and City employees are encouraged to leave donations of mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves in the collection bin or hang them on the Mitten Tree, both located in the lobby of the Abel Wolman Municipal Building, 200 Holliday Street. Donations will be accepted through Monday, December 21, and distributed by the Salvation Army’s Franklin Square Boys and Girls Club located at 215 Calhoun Street in West Baltimore.

DPW Offices, Sanitation Yards Closed on Independence Day , Thursday, July 4

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Acting Director Khalil Zaied reminds residents that Independence Day will be observed on Thursday, July 4, 2024. As a City-observed holiday, DPW offices and sanitation yards will be CLOSED. The Independence Day closure WILL impact weekly trash and recycling collections. Trash and recycling makeup day is Saturday, July 6, 2024. There will be NO street sweeping during the Independence Day closure.
