(Baltimore - April 25, 2013)  Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx today announced that the second phase of the Gwynns Run cleanup will begin tomorrow. The Department of Public Works and our partners came together for Phase I of the first ever mass cleanup of the Gwynns Run on March 22, 2013.

Tomorrow’s cleaning efforts, which will begin at 8:30 a.m., will remove remaining trash and visible debris on the surface of the water and along the outer banks. This will entail not only shoreline crews, but workers operating in boats. This multi-agency coordinated effort, led by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, will also include employees from the Department of Recreation and Parks, and inmates from the Maryland Division of Corrections.

The Gwynns Run in Carroll Park receives large amounts of trash and debris from storm drain outfalls. This trash, if not removed, eventually makes its way to the harbor and the Chesapeake Bay. Additional cleaning operations will occur to carry this effort into the Gwynns Falls and along that stream to Washington Boulevard.

“Baltimore is a city of streams which are the centerpieces of many of our parks. Keeping these clean involves a commitment from every citizen to put litter in its place and to keep it out of our storm drains,” said Director Foxx. “Clean streams and clean communities will help Baltimore to meet the Mayor’s goal of growing the city by 10,000 families over the next ten years.”
