BALTIMORE, MD —The Baltimore City Department of Public Works announced that installation of its new water meters, part of the BaltiMeter program, will expand into eastern Baltimore County in approximately two weeks. Residential meter installations in Baltimore City are substantially completed.

 

The installation area is approximately bounded by Route 40 (Pulaski Highway) on the west, and the Chesapeake Bay on the east. This includes the communities of Dundalk, Edgemere, Middle River, Essex, and Chase. A map of the new installation area is available at www.cleanwaterbaltimore.org/baltimeter; it is the portion of Sector 6 located within Baltimore County.

 

During these installations, water should typically need to be turned off for less than an hour. Customers will be notified by letter about in advance of the installations. The first letters will begin reaching affected customers on Tuesday, October 13. Door hang tags and street signs will be posted to notify customers that installations are pending. In addition, customers will be notified by a knock on the door just before the water is turned off. Meter installers will not need to enter customers’ homes. The first installations are expected to begin on Monday, October 19.

 

“The BaltiMeter program is part of DPW’s mission to ensure that our water metering and billing process is efficient, reliable, and accurate. The new automated meters will allow customers to know exactly how much water they are using, and have even more confidence in our system.” said DPW Director Rudolph S. Chow, P.E.

 

Automated meters eliminate the chance that meters cannot be read because of obstructions, weather, or other challenges. These new meters wirelessly transmit precise water usage. In the county, the meters will be read by an electronic device in the meter readers' vehicles, and the data is then loaded directly into the billing system.

 

Commercial customers will receive a letter directing them to contact 410-396-5352 to schedule an appointment for their meter upgrade. This is to minimize the impact to their business caused by a water disruption.

 

Baltimore City DPW provides water and sanitary sewer service to customers in both Baltimore City and Baltimore County jurisdictions. Between the two jurisdictions there are approximately 400,000 metered customers.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott has announced his intent to nominate Khalil Zaied as the new Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW). Zaied, who most recently led the Department of Public Works in Champaign, Illinois, will join DPW on March 18, 2024. Previously, he was a nearly 20 year veteran of Baltimore City Government, serving as Deputy Mayor of Operations and Director of Transportation, among other roles.

On Monday, March 4, Mayor Brandon M. Scott, Department of Public Works Interim Director Richard J. Luna, Department of General Services Director Berke Attila, and Baltimore City Chief Administrative Officer Faith Leach joined city staff and community members to highlight the return of weekly, curbside recycling collections for Baltimore City residents, starting Tuesday, March 5.
