Citywide Mechanical Street Sweeping

Mechanical street sweeping is rolling out this April to all of Baltimore’s neighborhoods!

We’re doing more to help our communities Clean Up Baltimore by keeping the streets and waterways cleaner and healthier. Tons of trash, grime, and other pollutants will be swept from in front of our homes, and kept out of storm drains and, ultimately, the Bay.
Residents can help make street sweeping as effective as possible by making sure their vehicles and other potential obstructions are out of the way on designated sweeping days.
The Northwest and Southeast portions of the City will be swept the first and second Wednesdays of each month (odd sides of the street will be swept on the 1st Wednesday; even sides on the 2nd), while the Northeast and Southwest portions of the City will be swept of the third and fourth Wednesdays (odd sides on the 3rd Wednesday, even sides on the 4th).

Why Sweep The Streets?

  • Trash and litter can block storm drains causing localized flooding during heavy rains.
  • Sweeping removes pollutants before they reach our urban streams, the Inner Harbor and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Clean streets reinforce to both residents and visitors that Baltimore is striving to be a greener, healthier city.

Enhanced Street Sweeping and Surface Water Management
  • Keeps streets well-maintained and helps protect surface water quality and the environment.
  • Removes pollutants from roadways.
  • More cost effective than trying to remove debris and pollutants after they enter the drainage system.

The New Street Sweeping System
  • Downtown will keep daily sweeping.
  • The AM and PM routes would remain largely as is.
  • The central portion of the city will keep the weekly posted routes; in addition, unserved adjacent areas – as part of a second phase of the program – will be integrated into those routes.
  • The quadrant portions of the city, which have few or no posted routes, will be scheduled for monthly sweeping.
